Tarakohe port and marina is owned by Tasman District Council and:
Least depth within harbour confines on wharf approach and alongside the main wharf is 4 metres at chart datum.
Vessels wishing to berth in Tarakohe Harbour are required to contact the Harbour Manager prior to entry to the harbour.
This does not include vessels using the trailer boat launching ramp or vessels that have an allotted berth.
If you have enquired with the port manager about a Long-Term berth or mooring but there are no spots available at this point in time or if you wish to enquire about a Long-Term berth or mooring but do not have a vessel yet then please complete a Waitlist application.
Availability of berths for casual users varies. Note that anchoring restrictions apply outside of the harbour. See the section below for more information.
Read more about the requirements (pdf 1.1 MB) you need to meet to ensure you can access shore power connections safely at the marina.
If you require access to operational areas at Port Tarakohe, please complete this short online application form.
Please complete this short form and you will be emailed the access code for the gated area.
The email also contains some infromation about how to protect the penguin colony in the gated area. Please take the time to read it and follow the guidelines.
Revised rules for the use of the Port Tarakohe marina came into effect in July 2021. You can read the rules here and then complete the online application forms for casual berths, long-term moorings and boat storage. If you have any questions please email Council's Enterprise Portfolio team or call us on 03 543 8400.

The dilapidated and unsafe timber wharf is gone; shabby and outdated facilities have been replaced and upgraded – Golden Bay’s Port Tarakohe is now fully open for business.
More than $12 million has been spent on the port upgrade, funded through a $6 million loan from Kanoa, the provincial development investment group within the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, on top of the $6.7 million we have invested.
The upgrade is designed to assist the Golden Bay Aquaculture industry.
Examples of the redevelopment work include a new fuel bowser moved to a new site at the end of the floating wharf, making it easier and more convenient for vessels to refuel.
New larger berths have been constructed, with the inner breakwater being extended to provide increased wave protection.
There’s a shiny new modern office and amenities block with the entire roof covered in solar panels to assist with powering the operations of port staff and users.
The inner eastern breakwater has also been extended with new concrete floating berths added to the northern pontoon system and additional fendering added around the existing concrete wharf.
The project also included a ‘resilience ramp’ that in times of disaster response will enable the delivery of supply barges to cater for Golden Bay’s needs when other access points are cut off.
Port Tarakohe |
Charges from 1 July 2025 incl. GST |
Fees and charges set in accordance with S33R MTA and S12 LGA Charges are based on a fee per metre Length Overall (LOA) of the vessel, or part thereof, or berth size, whichever is the greater (incl. GST). The LOA is measured from the vessels bow tip at deck level to the outer edge of the transom or stern, not including the rudder, outboard or fittings. All vessels on the Marina must be insured and hold a current EWOF. Port Tarakohe has cameras located around the Port to monitor activity, health & safety and security risks. The footage from these cameras will be used to support enforcement of charges for the use of facilities at the port. Cargo transferred between vessels within the Port is liable to standard wharfage charges. All charges for berths, moorings, storage and leased areas are payable in advance. For any overdue payments the penalty/default interest within the agreement will apply. If none specified, then a penalty interest charge of 1% per month will be payable. All berth, mooring, storage and leased area users are required to sign a current port-user-agreement when requested by the Port Manager. Berth and mooring users without a port-user-agreement will incur a 10% surcharge. No storage is permitted on wharf structures unless specifically authorised by the Port Manager in writing. Storage rates apply after 24 hours of cargo/material arriving (allowance to be made for extenuating circumstances such as bad weather). Storage to be in the assigned areas only. Bulk cargo in transit may have extended demurrage with approval of the Port Manager. A fixed marine fuelling site, or any mobile fuelling where oils are transferred by way of a hose or similar between shore-and-ship, or ship-to-ship, is required to have a Tier-1 Fuel Transfer Site Oil Spill Contingency Plan approved in advance by the Council’s Regional On-Scene Commander. This does not apply to the transfer of self-contained fuel containers (tote tanks, sealed drums or similar) from shore-to-ship or ship-to-ship. The Council as Port Operator has full control over any activities conducted within the Port and therefore approval in writing is required before any fuel transfer is permitted – any approvals will also be subject to per litre charges. Discounts for long-term bulk contracts and long-term wharf berthage can be approved by the Property & Enterprises Manager. |
