This rate funds solid waste activities including kerbside recycling, rubbish collection and other waste related activities.
It is charged to properties in the refuse-recycling rating area at $133.69 per rating unit.
Different rates apply in different areas.
All urban metered water connections (except Motueka) within the Tasman District pay a service charge rate of $542.60 per meter which is included on the rates invoice. Motueka's service charge rate is $120.98 per meter which is included on the rates invoice.
All urban metered water connections (except Motueka) within Tasman District are charged water at a rate of $4.09/m3. Motueka metered connections are charged at $3.83/m3

The wastewater rate is used to fund the wastewater activities including providing and managing wastewater treatment facilities and sewage collection and disposal.
The rate will apply to any rating unit which is connected to a public wastewater system.
There is a scale of charges depending on the number of pans on the property because the costs associated with wastewater are lower per pan, the more pans that are present. A toilet or urinal is referred to as a “pan.”
However for rating units used primarily as a residence for one household, only one pan will be charged for. The wastewater rates are presently as follows:

A rating unit with a building consent for a new dwelling to be used for residential purposes for one household with three toilets would be charged one pan $1,007.50
Please note that rating unit factors are determined each year at 30 June and are effective for the following rating year. So if you have built your property during the year with a connection to the wastewater network, your rates won’t be impacted until the next 1 July.
If you demolish a building that is paying pan charges, lapse a building consent without carrying out the building work or have toilets removed/capped, please notify us so we can review your rating treatment.

There are two pieces of legislation which guide the way rates are set in New Zealand - the Local Government Act 2002 and the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002. Almost all land is rateable, except land used for a few different purposes (such as Land forming part of National Park, land used by a council for a reserve, land used as a place of religious worship etc).
The method used by Tasman District Council and other councils to determine rates is set out in the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002. It also details criteria around the use of those rates. The Local Government Act 2002 sets out those processes and policies that must be applied in the establishment of rating systems.

The Council’s Funding Impact statement (“FIS”), included in the Council’s last Long Term Plan or Annual plan, explains how each rate is charged and specifies the amount of the rate. The FIS also includes a list of rates paid by a number of sample properties in the district.
