Heavy rain during the past week has caused the water levels in our sewage treatment plant ponds to reach extremely high levels.
This has forced us to revert to the system we used prior to 2016 and pump treated water into the adjacent soakage area where it is filtered through the ground.
The problem has been caused by stormwater infiltration where rainwater has entered the wastewater system directly from the surface. This is often from people connecting things like downpipes from rooves or where landscaping is level with gully traps which allows water run off to enter the waste system.
We expect the pumping to continue over the weekend and the situation will be reassessed next week.
People are advised not to have contact with any surface water in the soakage area.
